Hanna is a pre-med student who received her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of California San Diego. During her time at the university, she was involved in various clinical and non-clinical experiences. MCAT Studying Timeline

Hanna started studying during the second semester of her senior year of college. Due to the scare tactics and quantity of advertisements, she tried a Kaplan course. Hanna says she quickly regretted her purchase since the company was bureaucratic and did not care for her success. Therefore, Hanna stopped using Kaplan and decided it would be best to restart her MCAT prep during her gap year.

Once it was time to restart her prep, she decided it would be best to self-study. She started by purchasing the Princeton Review Textbooks. Hanna expressed, “I liked their content review, but I hated their strategies.” When one of her medical school friends told her about the power of using Anki (flashcard application) to study, she was convinced she had to use the app for the MCAT.

She looked online for the best Anki deck for the MCAT, which is how she discovered the MCAT for Victory course. After enjoying the free Anki course, she enrolled in the full MCAT for Victory course.

Hanna followed the 10-week MCAT for Victory schedule and used the adult learning techniques curated by the MCAT course. Hanna says she loved the pacing of the course; she felt engaged and was able to understand the material she once considered overly complicated.

When using the MCAT for Victory course, she made sure to follow the recommended structure based on the schedule:

  • Videos: Hanna first learned the material by watching the videos and ensured proper comprehension by watching some of the supplemental videos as well.
  • Textbooks: Hanna reviewed the material by reading through the textbook. She took notes to help her conceptualize the information, and to start the process of memorization.
  • Flashcards: Hanna then unsuspended the relevant Anki flashcards to memorize all the content covered in the videos and textbooks. She always kept up with all her flashcard reviews every day.
  • Questions: Hanna used the official AAMC questions to ensure her practice was as similar to the real MCAT as possible.


Hanna completed the AAMC question packs and practice exams as directed by the MCAT for Victory schedule. She went through her incorrect questions by taking notes in a notebook. Throughout her studies, she made sure to understand her mistakes before advancing to the next question. MCAT Advice

After her experience studying for the MCAT, Hanna wanted to share advice to students just getting started. First and foremost, Hanna stated that students do not need to study for as many months as they may assume. Instead, she found that her score significantly improved when she entirely dedicated herself to studying for ten weeks. Hanna stated that studying for longer wastes time and energy that students could use elsewhere to strengthen their medical school application.


Science Sections Advice

Whenever Hanna first began a science section, she took a minute to slow down and breathe. Once she started the section, she found it best to answer every question in a row. Since most questions are passage-based, Hanna realized it took her less time to answer complex questions as soon as she ran into them instead of coming back to them later. If she had skipped the question, then returned to it after some time, she would have had to reread portions of the passage. Therefore, Hanna recommends to at least select a best guess and cross out incorrect answer choices.

After taking five practice exams, she became comfortable with the timing of the test. She learned to pace herself, so she would not need to look at the countdown timer continuously.


Chemistry & Physics Section Advice

Hanna memorized the formulas covered in the MCAT for Victory course. She advises students to thoroughly understand the equations rather than use rote memorization. Due to her studies, whenever a question required an equation, she quickly figured out which formula to use and looked for the appropriate variables in the passage.

On the other hand, questions dealing with graphs took Hanna more time to answer. She recommends following these steps whenever a question involving a graph is encountered:

  1. Read the passage carefully to understand the hypothesis and measurements.
  2. Look at the title and labeling of the graph's axes.
  3. Understand the numbers and purpose of the graph.
  4. Orient yourself to how the researchers record the measures.
  5. Answer the question appropriately.


Biology & Biochemistry Advice

Hanna felt very comfortable in this section as she majored in biology. She was fascinated by the subject and found it easy to learn and remember the information. Hanna says students should review unknown terminology to help connect and cement the content.

She also stated that amino acids are heavily tested, so she recommends memorizing all the MCAT for Victory mnemonics. Finally, she suggests that test-takers highlight words that influence the products (e.g., stimulate, inhibit) whenever a passage involves a pathway.


Psychology & Sociology Section Advice

Hanna had the most difficulty with this section since she never took a general psychology class in college. At first, she consistently got confused by terms that sounded similar (e.g., social loafing, social facilitation). However, Hanna learned to easily differentiate the vocabulary words by using the MCAT for Victory Anki deck.


CARS Section Advice

Hanna shared that her CARS score drastically increased when she switched from the Princeton Review method to the MCAT for Victory method. Before starting MCAT for Victory, she used to read each paragraph independently and wrote a brief description before advancing to the next paragraph. However, she found this method inefficient, tedious, and confusing.

Hanna recommends reading frequently – she says reading helps with overall comprehension and understanding of the author. During the MCAT, she highlighted names and transition words (e.g., however, additionally, moreover). Once her performance improved, her anxiety went down, which further helped her perform even better. Hanna stated that using the MCAT for Victory method created a positive feedback loop for her CARS score and experience.  

Official MCAT Test Day

On her official test day, Hanna felt excited! Instead of feeling scared and anxious, she was “pumped.” During the exam, she sometimes ran into complex questions. Still, she trusted her gut and understood that if she thought a question was tricky, there was a good chance that most other test-takers also thought it was a hard question. She felt as though the exam flew by since she kept herself grounded and trusted her practice.

Hanna took advantage of every single break. During the 10-minute breaks, she only had time to go to the bathroom and return to her desk. Hanna found timing herself on the breaks challenging since her exam center did not have a clock. She also took advantage of the 30-minute break by eating her lunch and practicing deep breathing.

Hanna’s practice paid off since she timed herself perfectly to finish the chem/phys and bio/biochem sections on time. She even ended the CARS and psych/soc sections with time to spare.
